AUSTIN (KXAN) — An Austin man is in jail accused of hitting an Austin police patrol car and failing to stop.

Mark Anthony Arriaga, 25, is charged with evading arrest in a motor vehicle.

According to an arrest affidavit, an officer was working a traffic crash in the 500 block of Bastrop Highway when his patrol car was struck by Arriaga around 2:20 a.m. on Saturday, July 14. The patrol car had its emergency lights flashing at the time of the crash.

Police say after the crash, Arriaga kept going but the officer was able to get the first three characters of the license plate and told other officers it was a white sedan.

A nearby officer found the suspect vehicle at a parking lot a few blocks away but when the officer asked Arriaga to step out of the vehicle, he took off, according to court documents.

Arriaga and a woman inside his car were both detained a short time later. After his arrest, Arriaga admitted that “he felt he was drunk while he was driving” and that he knew he hit a patrol vehicle, according to court documents.

When officers searched his vehicle, they found 7.4 grams of heroin, which is 29 times the average single dosage amount, police say. Arriaga told police he recently started selling heroin.
